Although it’s a country that’s in a long-term polyamorous relationship with both pork and sour-cream, Budapest is shockingly great for vegans and vegetarians. There are over 23 pure vegan restaurants, there’s plenty of vegan options in the supermarkets and they even have a whole vegan garden. And, it has the added bonus of being a rather cheap holiday destination – if you’re coming from the West at least anyway. I took a risk and bought some of those dead-looking plants off the supermarket reduced trolly, but should I have bothered? Only time will tell but with some good cultivation technique I may be able to revive at least one of them.
