Teams Named for Santos PNG Orchids Trial Match

 The Santos PNG Orchids selection process ahead of this year’s Rugby League World Cup (RLWC) will continue in Port Moresby this week, with 34 eligible players to face off in a trial match on Saturday 13 August at the Santos National Football Stadium to assist with final squad selections. Orchids coach Ben Jeffries will travel from Australia to Papua New Guinea this week to observe training sessions and the match, which are being delivered by PNG-based Orchids staff and Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League (PNGRFL). Initially it was hoped that 10 Australia-based potential Orchids players would travel to PNG to participate in the trial match alongside their PNG-based counterparts, but this has been deferred in line with a recent decision by the Queensland Rugby League (QRL) to delay the SP PNG Hunters’ season return to Port Moresby out of an abundance of caution due to national election processes. PNG Police will not allow public demonstration over Tkatchenko Saga

 The Chief of the Police in the National Capital District, NCD Metropolitan Superintendent Silva Sika, said police operations in the city will be ramped up and police will be on heightened alert from tomorrow onwards after rumours of a planned protest march began circulating. Rumours and suggestions of the planned protest march began circulating over the social media with regards to comments made by side-lined Foreign Affairs Minister Justine Tkatchenko over the recent trip to London for the coronation of King Charles III. A group calling themselves the Coalition of Concerned Citizens delivered a letter to the Metropolitan Superintendent’s office today, requesting police to grant approval for the planned protest march. Mr Sika said the organisers of the planned protest march are using the social media to persuade city residents to form up at the Pacific Institute of Leadership and Governance Institute in Waigani tomorrow and walk to the National Parliament.
