If you live in the warmer climates of southern and south-western corners of the United Kingdom and Ireland then you may well have noticed a very unusual and overly tall flowering plant that has been coming increasingly common in these parts. It is the Tree Echium – Echium pininana and despite being endemic to La Palma in the Canaries, it has begun to naturalise here in the warmest regions of our country. The fact that Echium pininana is naturalising proves that conditions are great for growing this super-impressive plant in your own garden. However the further north you go the more difficult it will be for it to cope with the colder winters. Of course you can consider wrapping juvenile plants with horticultural fleece to protect the growing tip ensuring that the magnificent flowering spike in produced the following spring.
