Mazda to reveal PHEV with rotary engine

Mazda rotary brand identity, with original Wankel pic by Softeis, courtesy CC BY-SA 3.0. A plug-in hybrid version of Mazda’s MX-30 electric car will be unveiled at the Brussels Motor Show on Friday next, writes Brian Byrne. The powertrain will use the company rotary petrol engine as an electricity generator to power the electric traction motor. No further details of the car have been revealed, but it will be on sale in European markets in the spring. The Mazda rotary engine is based on the concept developed by German engineer Felix Wankel in the 1950s. The Japanese company produced it for a range of RX sports cars until 2012, after which it was only used in a racing championship up to 2017. A prototype rotary engine used as an EV range extender was shown in a Mazda2 in 2013.

Review: Suzuki S-Cross Hybrid - Brian Byrne, Irish Car

Whenever I get back into a Suzuki I’m reminded of how good they are, writes Brian Byrne. Well built, well finished, and not trying to be a Starship Enterprise in style or conquer the universe ambition. Their cars are generally for everyday real people and their real needs. The S-Cross small SUV is a good example. Sitting in the space that includes Peugeot’s 2008 and Volkswagen’s T-Roc, the S-Cross originally evolved from a hatchback called SX4, and the latest version of the vehicle was launched in Ireland almost exactly a year ago. The style is chunky and strong without being aggressive. A good word for the overall impression is ‘tidy’. It sits high enough to make getting in and out easy, but isn’t particularly tall in itself. That tidy epithet is also appropriate inside. Dashboard style and trim have enough shapes to be interesting, and in both areas are finished in high quality materials with a notably good fit and finish. The high-mounted centre infotainment screen is small enough t

Tropical Gardens UK - Why do Tree Ferns Need So Much Fertiliser?

Tree ferns are becoming ever more expensive to purchase so keeping them in top condition has got to be priority. Unfortunately many of the specimens I come across in the UK are usually pale in colour with stunted growth and a narrowing crown. However it is always possible to improve their condition with correct watering and fertiliser application. In a previous video we discussed how your should feed your tree fern, however in this video we go into detail as to why tree ferns require so much more feeding and at a higher concentration. However watch the video to the end as over fertilising any plant incorrectly can cause root damage! Vegetable Gardening UK: How To Grow Cucumber from Seed - The Best and Ea...

Given the right equipment and seeds this video covers the best and easiest way to grow cucumbers from seed. It is all about using quality F1 hybrid cucumber seeds, keeping all of the equipment clean and sterile, and sowing into sterilised compost. However perhaps the mosting important things are sowing at the right time and using a heated propagator. But there is a little more to this than initially seems at face value. Cucumbers are a tropical plant and when you are trying to grow them in the UK you have to manage the temperature requirements of this plant. Temperatures below 12 degrees Celsius can shock this plant into a conditions where it just refuses to grow. Any lower and cold damage can occur and you will easily lose your plant. There are of course cultivars available now which are more capable of surviving in the UK without the additional heat provided by a green house but you will never get the yields achieved by a quality cultivar in a green house.
