Author Jennie Shortridge stops by... (and a Giveaway)

Readers, please join me welcoming Jennie Shortridge , author of When She Flew , who’s guest blogging here today! “Mesmerized” by the true story of a war veteran and his twelve-year-old daughter who, after going undetected for years, were discovered living in a densely wooded Portland park, Shortridge—ever the novelist—empathized strongly with those involved, from the father and child to those who found and then became involved in their lives. Soon a character emerged, one that captured the conflicting emotions and responsibilities of those obligated to carry out specific actions, even when it goes against their instincts. One of my favorite parts the writing process is doing research. My latest novel, When She Flew , is based on a true story, which required extensive research. I first heard about the Vietnam vet raising his daughter outdoors in the Oregon woods when I was living in Portland in 2004. The story captivated me as it unfolded in the media. The thoughts and emotions i...

Cold Hardy Spanish Moss? Try growing Dichondra argentea 'Silver Falls'

It is undeniable that the pendulous hanging growth of Spanish moss – Tillandsia usneoides is evocative of the tropical and subtropical climates of central America. However if you want to replicat this effect in colder, northern European countries then unfortunately Spanish moss isn’t going to survive. However if you are happy to squint a little you can achieve a strongly similar look by growing Dichondra argentea ‘Silver Falls’. This wonder hanging plant cultivar makes for a great substituent albeit that it is not an epiphyte and will need to have its root system growing in a pot. To find out more about this under-used yet tough-as-old-boots (at least in the south of England) herbaceous perennial then check out our video above. Tropical Gardens UK: How to Overwinter (Winterize) Glory Lily, Flame li...

Most gardeners responsible for exotic gardens dread the late autumn as with it come a huge amount of plant winterisation. One such plant is the Glory lily which cannot be left out in freezing, wet conditions otherwise the root tubers will easily damage and rot! There are a few techniques which you can employ, usually I tip the pot over mid-autumn to prevent rain water from soaking the root-ball then I bring the pot into the greenhouse and leave it to dry out until I bring it back in the spring. This year I have done it differently as I am out of space in the green house which turned out to be perfect as a number of my hardy exotic have been damaged despite being in the greenhouse due to an exceptionally cold spell! So now the tubers have been washed clean, dried and stored in a drawer in the kitchen. Once the threat of late frosts have passed they will be potted on again, placed outside in full sun and watered thoroughly. If you would like to see more content like this then you can che...
