PNG Finance and Tax Headquarters Locked out

The Papua New Guinea Finance Department and  Internal Revenue Commission IRC headquarters in Port Moresby have been locked out.  Officers from the nation’s tax office were locked out of the Revenue Haus building in downtown Port Moresby this morning by the landlord Nambawan Super Limited (NSL). This also includes the doors to Vulupindi Haus at Waigani, which houses the National Department of Finance. Both the Revenue Haus and Vulupindi Haus are owned by NSL. Commissioner of the Internal Revenue Commission (IRC) Sam Koim told the media this morning that as a lawyer, he understands the landlord for exercising their right over non-payment of rental arrears by the Government.  He clarified that if IRC was responsible for its own debts, it would have cleared its rental arrears totalling K12 million.  However, this responsibility has been centralised to the Department of Finance.  The IRC Commissioner is unsure at this stage when the office will be reopened for normal business.  NBC New...

Ford looks to patent 'repossession' tech

One of the features of the ever more connected car is that carmakers are increasingly ‘over the air’ in charge of many functions, writes Brian Byrne. In the same way that we have got used to the operating systems in our phones and computers being automatically updated across the internet, this is happening in many of the latest new cars which are ‘always on’ connected to base by proprietary online systems. For extra services owners can subscribe via a monthly fee. But that electronic ‘street’ is very much a two-way thing, and the extra services can be disabled if the subscription is ceased.  Ford is one manufacturer looking at bringing that control a step further. In the US is is trying to patent a system for disabling a car over the air if the buyer hasn’t kept up repayments on the vehicle. The company’s application for a patent titled “Systems and Methods to Repossess a Vehicle” was published by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) last week. Looks like th...
