Acting PM Rosso outlines importance of PNG Prime Minister Marape’s attendance at PIF

The Acting PNG Prime Minister, Hon. John Rosso, MP, says the 51st Pacific Islands Forum, which Prime Minister James Marape will be attending, in Suva, Fiji, is the most significant in recent history, as the region gradually emerges from the grips of the COVID-19 pandemic.

He made these remarks in his first press conference in Port Moresby, today.

“Prime Minister Marape, who has also been caught up in election matters, has made time available in his very busy schedule to participate as Head of Government at this important regional summit.

“It is also important that our Prime Minister attends this meeting as he will be handing over the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) Chair to Vanuatu.

“The PIF is a very important regional meeting for all Pacific nations, and as the sitting Prime Minister of the largest island nation, it is only fitting that he attends to ensure that PNG presence is felt and where he supports and discusses progress on our shared-regional issues.

“Hence, until the Return of Writs, as stipulated by law, Prime Minister Marape still remains the Head of our Government,” Acting Prime Minister Rosso clarified.

The Acting Prime Minister said he is confident he would return as the Lae Open MP and hopes to return as the Lands and Physical Planning Minister as there is still much work to be completed and policies to be implemented.

“When we return to form Government, our first focus would be to address the election challenges we are currently facing and move into the electronic voting system, to avoid such issues from being repeated,” Acting Prime Minister Rosso said.
