Commonwealth Observer Group calls for Urgent Review of PNG Election Process

The Commonwealth Observer Group that are observing the  Papua New Guinea National Elections  has called for immediate reforms to strengthen the election process. The Group expressed sadness about the escalation in election-related violence and strongly condemn these acts of violence. Mr Waqa presented the Interim Statement of the Commonwealth Observer Group in Port Moresby yesterday. The Commonwealth Observer Group met voters, polling officials, political parties, security personnel, civil society and scrutineers, to understand the electoral process. PNG High Court refuses O'Neill's bid to stay Parliament Sitting

A three-men Supreme Court bench has refused an urgent application by Peter O’Neill this morning seeking orders to stay the Parliament from sitting today. Mr. O’Neill is arguing that for Parliament to be called, there has to be a declaration of all 118 seats. The bench refused the application after it ruled that there is no urgency in the application. Solicitor-General Tauvasa Tanuvasa who represented the Attorney-General in the matter said Parliament is already in the process of meeting this morning and Mr O’Neill did not satisfy the court that he would be prejudiced in any way if Parliament met.  NBC / PNG Today Next :  PNG National budget set for September
