PNG Elections : Court to decide on Hagen Open Returning Officer's Appointment

The National Court in Waigani will make a ruling today on an application filed by the State to dismiss a second judicial review proceeding by the former Returning Officer for Hagen Open electorate, Willie Ropa. Mr. Ropa’s first judicial review proceeding filed on June 14th, 2022 was dismissed by the Court on July 4th, and the current proceeding was filed again on July 8th, through Henao Lawyers. The judicial review proceedings is in relation to the decision of the Electoral Commissioner made on June 2nd, where Mr. Ropa’s appointment as the Returning Officer for the Hagen Open electorate for the 2022 National Election, was revoked and Pius Nop was appointed. Submissions were made yesterday.  The Plaintiff claims that he was not given a Notice of the purported revocation, including reasons for the revocation, and this is in breach of his right to be heard.  Therefore, after being unsuccessful in his previous judicial review matter, he filed this current proceeding again to cha...

Buckley’s Story is the story of how one small cat changed the author’s life in ways she never could have imagined. In this warm-hearted memoir, Ingrid King shares the story of Buckley, a joyful, enthusiastic and affectionate tortoiseshell cat she meets while managing a veterinary hospital. Writing about Cats – Amber’s Story One of the questions most frequently asked of me since the release of Buckley’s Story – Lessons from a Feline Master Teacher has been why Buckley? What was so special about this particular cat, rather than any of the other cats who have been part of my life, that inspired me to write a book about her? You’ll have to read the book to find out how she changed my life in ways I never could have imagined by teaching me universal lessons about opening my heart and living a joyful life. As t...

The Martian by Andy Weir

Have you ever picked up a book by an author you’ve never heard of, written in a genre that’s not your usual cup of tea and with a title that reminds you of a cheesy sci-fi movie…and then ended up loving it? That’s how it was with me and ‘The Martian’. The story is pretty straightforward. A manned mission to Mars goes wrong and the crew have to flee the surface in haste when a storm threatens to destroy their take-off vehicle. In the chaos, botanist/mechanical engineer Mark Watney is injured. Believing him to be dead, the crew takes off. However, Watney is still alive. And he has every intention of “staying alive” (a song our hero adopts as his theme song – yes, Watney is funny that way). Mark Watney becomes the first Martian – a good humored, resourceful and the one and only resident of Mars. How he survives on a freezing cold planet with no help in sight and no way to communicate with Earth makes for a terrifically compelling...
