How to dead-head Dahlias

There is often some confusion when it comes to dead-heading Dahlias as the spent blooms and the newly forming buds can look very similar. Also there seems to be a general habit of snapping off the heads of Dahlias and leaving unsightly stalks behind. So if you want to know the difference between an finished flower and a bud about to bloom and the best technique to remove the stalks then check out our video above on everything you need to know about dead-heading dahlias. If you have any questions at all then don’t forget to leave a message in the comments, we would love to hear from you. Also consider pressing the subscribe button so that you never miss an episode.

African Cacti 'Orbea variegata' - Carrion Flower or Star Flower

If you are interested in growing African cacti then Orbea variegata is probably the easiest species to begin with. Although not actually a cactus but instead a specialist succulent it is super-easy to grow, super-easy to propagate and will even survive outside in an unheated greenhouse (at least it will where I live on the south coast of England. And this isn’t a bad thing as when the blooms open they will smell of carrion!  They can be difficult to find but they will pop up at Cacti and Succulent shows as well as maybe some plant material on-line from which you can propagate your own specimens. Of course the best thing about these wonderful plants are the gorgeous blooms which are incredible intricate in their colouration and design. The second best thing this that they will thrive on neglect just so long as you water them at least once a month but preferably weekly during the growing season. Can You Be Vegan in Tokyo?

Japan is the first country I’ve visited where I wished I wasn’t vegan! I mean this isn’t really saying much since I’ve become vegan I’ve only travelled to countries I’ve been to as a meat-eater and thus don’t have the fear of missing out (Italy, Germany, USA, Thailand Philippines ). OR I’ve been to new countries which are super great for vegans and/or aren’t really renowned for their exciting cuisine anyway ( Canada , Laos , Malaysia , Indonesia and Dubai – I’ll let you work out which ones fall into which category. lol). But back to Japan: Japan is the first country I’ve visited where I considered not being vegan. Why? Why Is It Hard to Be Vegan in Tokyo? 1. If, like me, you don’t read or speak Japanese there’s no way you’re going to be able to guess what’s in the food – this isn’t like Italy where you can make an educated guess. 2. In Japan, there are some super unusual foods and food-combos – the temptation to go into a supermarket or restaurant and order something blind is overwh

Things That Vegans Surprisingly Can Eat... Like Bread and Pasta!

Alongside the usual questions people ask me like  ‘ why are you vegan? ‘ ,  ‘ isn’t it unhealthy to be vegan? ‘ and  ‘ is it possible to travel as a vegan? ‘,  people often ask me if vegans can eat certain things – like bread and pasta. In fact the two questions I’m asked the most are “can vegans eat pasta” and “can vegans eat bread?” (Spoiler alert: yes, mostly…)  It’s a fair question. To most, what a vegetarian  can and can’t eat is very simple: vegetarians don’t eat meat and meat tends to come as meat and isn’t really hidden anywhere… okay, there are a few exceptions like sweets, parmigiano cheese and certain beers, but meat very often looks like what it is (albeit usually without feathers, bones and skin, etc).  But what a vegan can and can’t eat is much harder: alongside the meat and fish that vegetarians can’t eat, vegans just don’t consume any kind of animal product at all: no dairy, no eggs or honey – all three of which are used in many many types of  processed   food . Hearty Vegan Chickpea Pasta Soup Recipe (easy to make on the go)

This is a really filling, healthy and delicious ‘soup’. It’s the kind of soup that you have as a main not as a starter (i.e. it’s super filling). This is a comforting meal perfect for a chilly day. But it also doesn’t taste bad cold with plenty of lime or lemon on a hot day. It’s super healthy and so thus I never really fancy it, but I always love it when I do have it. It has a very interesting, almost unique, flavour and texture. Chickpeas are a super-star for vegans in Europe – they can be found in almost every country/supermarket (though generally only the bigger supermarkets) and they’re almost always really cheap (around 40 cents a can).  In South East Asia they’re not impossible to find – I’ve found them in big supermarkets in Chiang Mai, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur, but here’s the sticky part: they’re super expensive, and they’re shipped from Italy usually. So you have to ask yourself, are you going to pay 60baht for a tin (around £1.20) when you could easily find a whole meal for
